Computing with Realizational Morphology
نویسنده
چکیده
The theory of realizational morphology presented by Stump in his influential book Inflectional Morphology (2001) describes the derivation of inflected surface forms from underlying lexical forms by means of ordered blocks of realization rules. The theory presents a rich formalism for expressing generalizations about phenomena commonly found in the morphological systems of natural languages. This paper demonstrates that, in spite of the apparent complexity of Stump’s formalism, the system as a whole is no more powerful than a collection of regular relations. Consequently, a Stump-style description of the morphology of a particular language such as Lingala or Bulgarian can be compiled into a finite-state transducer that maps the underlying lexical representations directly into the corresponding surface forms or forms, and vice versa, yielding a single lexical transducer. For illustration we will present an explicit finite-state implementation of an analysis of Lingala based on Stump’s description and other sources.

Modeling Morphosyntactic Agreement in Constituency-Based Parsing of Modern Hebrew
We show that naı̈ve modeling of morphosyntactic agreement in a Constituency-Based (CB) statistical parsing model is worse than none, whereas a linguistically adequate way of modeling inflectional morphology in CB parsing leads to improved performance. In particular, we show that an extension of the Relational-Realizational (RR) model that incorporates agreement features is superior to CB models ...
متن کاملRealizational morphology beyond the lexicon: synthetic and periphrastic verbs in Shona
In this paper, I argue that the choice of a periphrastic over a synthetic verbal form in Shona is a strategy to avoid the realization of specific combinations of morphosyntactic properties by the same word form. I argue that periphrastic forms with -nga are formally equivalent to synthetic forms in the verbal paradigm of Shona, based on the assumption that inflected words are not formed in the ...
متن کاملProcess morphology in a realizational theory
This paper provides an analysis of scalar tone shift in Guébie as constraint-driven and morphosyntactically conditioned, rather than triggered by a particular abstract underlying representation. Much recent literature has claimed that all morphology involves affixation of morphemes with underlying (abstract) phonological representations (Benua 1997, Alderete 2001,Wolf 2007, Gouskova & Linzen 20...
متن کاملLexicalism, periphrasis and implicative morphology1
Several other chapters in this book analyze grammatical phenomena according to the architectural assumptions and constraint-based representational apparatus of lexicalist theories of grammar; in the present chapter, we ask some fundamental questions concerning what it means for a theory to be lexicalist. While critically assessing some consensus beliefs among lexicalists, this exploration will ...
متن کاملThe Morphology of the Basque Auxiliary: Thoughts on Arregi
Arregi and Nevins (2012) provide an explicit formulation of DistributedMorphology (DM) and support it with an illuminating and detailed treatment of Basque auxiliaries. I present a critique of their theoretical framework and of their analysis, and argue for constraint-based lexicalist morphology (LM), which differs from DM in two principal ways. First, while DM is REALIZATIONAL in the sense tha...
